Designed to act as a new ‘cap’ for the natural tooth, crowns are one of the most common ways to restore and repair teeth that have become damaged in some way. In most cases, this damage may have occurred as a result of decay, abrasion, injury, or because of a failed filling. We also use crowns to ensure the success of root canal treatments when the tooth in question has become severely damaged, as well as to support a dental bridge.
Traditionally made from a precious metal like gold, modern techniques and advances in dental materials mean most crowns are now made from either porcelain or Zirconia. Both offer patients a much more natural-looking and aesthetically pleasing finish, fitting in with the rest of the mouth practically seamlessly, so you don’t have to worry about how your smile looks.
Receiving a crown occurs over two appointments. We’ll first prepare the tooth by removing any damaged or decayed parts and then take digital scans and images of the mouth and tooth. These will be used by the dental laboratory where your personal crown will be made. Once it’s ready for you – usually after about two weeks – we’ll fit it for you and cement it into place here at the practice. In most cases, we’ll be able to provide you with a temporary crown while you wait for your bespoke crown to be manufactured.
